After a few minutes the manturned to the priest and asked, "Say Father, what causes arthritis?"
The priest replies, "My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of a bath."
The drunk muttered in response "Well, I'll be damned," then returned to his paper.
The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. "I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?"
The drunk answered, "I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does."
ROFLMAO!

i can't believe i just did this.
we're in NC, and we've had balmy weather up until now. sleet/freezing rain forecast for this morning.
so i get up and check the news station's website, closings. we live in forsyth county; i see "forsyth" and "opens at 10 a.m."
so i put my kids back to bed and ignored them.
the bus just went up the road. DH comes in and says what-up??? then i remember - it's "winston-salem/forsyth county schools." check the website. we're on time; it's a private school, "forsyth country day school," that's starting at 10.
I could just cry. they have to get ready in 10 minutes b/c #2 has testing this week, HAS to be there. and _I_ made him go back to bed! i feel so bad. somebody hug me!

weird dreams
last night i dreamed that the triplets were for a lady in our church (who has two daughters, 7 and 9, and no need for triplets!). she couldn't pick them up as soon as they were born, so my mom and i were watching them (mom and i live 3000 miles apart).
it was actually a really neat experience, playing with those babies, and for some reason they could crawl and talk a little and try to walk (but they were newborns, just acting 9 months old or something). they were all different sizes, too. we really enjoyed playing with them and taking care of them.
maybe i've been worried about all the work involved in new babies, and needed to remember all the rewarding parts, the play and the learning. whatever, last night i enjoyed my dreams!
anyone else having freaky dreams?

"To save lives," the professor responded quickly, and continued the lecture.
A few minutes later, the same student spoke up again. "So how does physics save lives?" he persisted.
"It keeps the ignoramuses like you out of medical school," replied the professor.

14w4d update
only 20 more days until we find out gender of baby-to-be!
joke du jour 1/10
"You are all part of our team now", said the HR rep during the welcoming briefing. "You get all the usual benefits and you can go to the cafeteria for something to eat, but please don't eat any of our employees."
The cannibals promised they would not.
Four weeks later the HR rep called them together and remarked, "You're all working very hard and we're satisfied with your work. However, one of our secretaries has disappeared. Do any of you know what happened to her?"
The cannibals all shook their heads 'No.' After the HR rep had left the room, the leader of the cannibals said to the others, "OK - which one of you idiots ate the secretary?"
A hand rose hesitantly.
"You fool!" the leader continued. "For four weeks we've been eating managers, and no one noticed anything. But NOOOooo, you had to go and eat someone who actually does something!!!"

another in the same theme
She didn't know what to do, so she called home and told the baby sitter what had happened. The baby sitter told her that the fever was getting worse. She said, "You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door."
The woman looked around and found an old rusty coat hanger that had been left on the ground, possibly by someone else who at some time had locked their keys in their car. She looked at the hanger and said, "I don't know how to use this." She bowed her head and asked God to send her help.
Within five minutes a beat-up old motorcycle pulled up, with a dirty, greasy, bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag on his head. The woman thought, "This is what you sent to help me?"
The man got off of his cycle and asked if he could help.
She said, "Yes, my daughter is very sick. I stopped to get her some medication and I locked my keys in my car. I must get home to her. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?"
He said, "Sure." He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was opened.
She hugged the man and through her tears she said, "Thank You So Much! You are a very nice man."
The man replied, "Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison today. I was in prison for car theft and have only been out for about an hour."
The woman hugged the man again and with tears cried out loud,"Oh, thank you God! You even sent me a professional!"

This and the grocery joke are hilarious, partly because you could see the germ of truth in their reactions! and the Hand of God is something we can't say didn't do these things. so laugh, because they're funny! and pray, because we want to stay on His good side.
As Damon Wayans said, when asked if there was anything he WOULDN'T crack jokes about (such as handicapped people, etc.), he said "I don't make any God jokes, because I don't want God making any Damon Wayans jokes!" I love that attitude.

non sequitur
give me a comment to help me celebrate my two years with blogger! and i've just upgraded to google, so looking forward to the next two years! (i couldn't get through my day without google.)
a giggle a day 1/4
Every morning, the atheist in the house across from her shouted back, "There is no Lord!"
One day, when the woman is out on her porch she says, "Dear God, I'm hungry. Please send me groceries."
The next day, when she goes out to her porch, she sees a huge bag of groceries on her doorstep. "Praise the Lord!" she shouts.
"Aha!" says the neighbour, stepping out from the bushes. "This is proof that there's no God: I brought those groceries myself."
"Praise the Lord!" says the woman again. "Not only did the Lord send the groceries, he made the devil pay for them."

joke du jour 1/2/07
A bus carrying only ugly people crashes into an oncoming truck and everyone inside dies. When they get to meet their maker, because of the grief they have experienced, he decides to grant them one wish each before they enter Heaven.
They're all lined up, and God asks the first one what their wish is. "I want to be gorgeous." So God snaps His fingers, and it is done. The second one in line hears this and says, "I want to be gorgeous too." Another snap of His fingers and the wish is granted.
This goes on for a while with each one asking to be gorgeous, but when God is halfway down the line, the last guy in the line starts laughing. When there are only ten people left, this guy is rolling on the floor, laughing his head off.
Finally, God reaches this last guy and asks him what his wish will be. The guy eventually calms down and says:
"Make 'em all ugly again."
So, the next time you are last in line...smile!

my annual bra rant
i've been angry about them for days/weeks now. as you know, i'm knocked up. and, well, my boobies are VERY knocked up! i'm overflowing my bras when i wear the ones that make me look well-endowed. then they're rather graphic.
the dang things ached from day of ovulation for months on end and still do intermittently. i got them sports bras. they got better and i put them into their favorites, and they overflow. if i ever have two 20's to rub together, i'm gonna head to motherhood and pick up a couple of industrial-strength bras.
until then - i remain Deep in Thought

update #2
"remove me from the list I don't feel that the [deleted] board is for me anymore. I think one person went over the line on a PERSONAL issue that I am dealing with. I have every right to have my feelings, and to say that I don't is un called for. I was not telling someone that their opinion was wrong, I was saying that their information was wrong and to jump to conclusions was wrong on her part.
"OHH [sister] how is RJD...my 2.5 year old going to help me? he can't you obviously don't know what you are talking about. And obvioulsly you need some education to learn a few things. You THINK you know me and you don't, you can't and don't know my every thought. I cannot and will not be talking to you until you realize that what YOU were telling me was fueling the fire.
don't mean to bring this up here, but this is the LAST post I will make on this thread. REMOVE me from the group, I found a support group that is helping me not telling me to do something that I KNOW I DONT NEED. "
*************
and i'm afraid my reply to her was less kind than my earlier post:
"i'm truly sorry you feel that way, and that you can't see that your extreme negativity is hurting you as well as those around you. it's interesting that you prefer that support group when you are attacking people's replies to you there - but selectively - if one person says you could use help, it's ok, but if another does, they are subject to your rants and attacks. if you keep attacking the support group you've found, they will not continue supporting you, as i commented there.
"i have seen such a consistent negative energy from you that i am very concerned about your wellbeing. however, i will honor your wishes and remove your from the mommy list. i will also block your posts as your negative energy and comments have more than once impacted my own mood severely.
"I have dealt with depression for many years and i do know a thing or two, but you may believe i know nothing if you prefer to do so. medication and counseling have helped millions, but if you believe they will do nothing for you, they will not, as you refuse to try. having tried one antidepressant means absolutely nothing about whether they can help you now.
"i'd like to think that being thus frank and blunt with you will make an impact and you will hear my words as well as the honest emotion behind it hoping your situation will improve. but i don't expect it to.
"it's a shame you condemn an entire group based on one or two people in it. that's why they have an "ignore user" button, so you can ignore people who irritate you."
well, i'm not thinking about this anymore right now. i'm really worried about her, her sister says her husband is very concerned, worried about her children and his, but clearly she will not accept help. i guess i'll just have to pray for her. that would probably irritate her, too!
update
however, in a separate area/board, her SISTER posts that she's been involved in this crazy sitch, and she's glad she's not the only who has seen the pattern - referring to MY post!
i wasn't sure whether to post it or not, but i'm glad i did, if only so one person could see it and know they're not crazy. i'm glad she let me know that i also am not crazy.
apparently it was sister, not in-law, and she's also PG. and the first person did not mention the nasty word she hurled at her - beginning with C and _I'VE_ never said it!
so, i'm hearing two different sides, and one is refraining from getting into it, and the other can't stop screaming. you know which side i'm going to sympathize with!
ps - it's her SIXTH child, not fifth. just do not understand this mentality at all. _I_ was upset to find i was having boys, more so the first time than the second. but you're not in charge!
pulling my hair out
most of the people are extremely supportive and tolerant of differences. sometimes they get advice they don't like, which they will explain why they aren't taking it, or just ignore it.
but you have to get one bad apple in the bunch. this girl is so DAMN negative i have previously clicked "ignore user" so i wouldn't have to read her bitchy posts. she's a or two month ahead of me in her pregnancy. she used to whine all the time, then complain that people weren't replying to HER posts, and that must be personal. PLEASE! the only reason it would be personal is b/c she's such a monster.
she's been venting for some time about EVERYTHING. venting is a good thing. when people offer suggestions, you should be grateful, even if they're not what you want to hear. and we're all hormonal.
well, she found out what gender baby she's having (her fifth, think she'd be used to not being in charge by now!), and she is psychotic over it. told her sister-in-law how very upset she was, and SIL talked to MIL and discussed CPS, b/c chickie is seriously going off.
sure, everybody vents. and i wouldn't go so far as CPS. but her in-laws are trying to get her to see she's more upset than is normal and that she should get/accept some help.
any reply to her tirade that suggested she could use some counseling or medication to help the sitch was met with virulent opposition. she was yelling at the people who were trying to help her - further confirming in MY mind that she NEEDED it.
i just can't cope with this kind of person. i'm emotionally dependent on my chat rooms as they are most of my adult interaction throughout the day, but this one child in an adult's body is ruining it for me! and i have to maintain cordial relationships b/c i run the "mommy list" we're both on.
well, i'll have to reply some of my thoughts from here (see two paragraphs up), and see how she responds. i'd probably do better to keep my mouth shut, but that's just not me!
ADDENDUM: WHAT I SAID:
i'd probably do better to keep my mouth shut, but that's just not me!
everybody vents. your in-laws' reactions were extreme and went too far when they said the word/letters "CPS."
but most of the people here are extremely supportive, and tolerant of differences. it's one of the reasons i love my webMD message boards. i didn't see anyone giving you anything but positive messages and suggestions. whether you agree or not, i was shocked by your reaction to people who are trying to help you.
i have to say that your replies to people's suggestions and offerings only confirmed in my mind that you do need some kind of help.
you do have every right to be mad [her words], and every right to disagree. but the level you've taken this to is unhealthy, and you're not handling things well.
we're all hormonal, and we all overreact sometimes. and i'd like to think that's what is going on. and i WAS glad to see that you know you're in a bad place, and that should it continue, you know to seek help.
please give your fellow preggos the benefit of the doubt and stop accusing people of "always" giving you negative feedback or singling you out for negative treatment. nobody here is doing that to my experience, and this isn't the first time i've read your posts complaining of that.
we're all here to support one another - it goes both ways. we want you to come to a peaceful place about this baby, whatever gender it comes out with. and we want you here, to share in the support and love that goes around. (((big hugs)))

joke of the day 12/28/06
The clerk says no, and the duck leaves.
The next day, the duck returns and asks, "Do you have any grapes?"
The clerk again says no, and the duck leaves.
The day after that, the duck walks in the store again and asks "Do you have any grapes?"
The clerk screams at the duck, "You've come in here the past two days and asked if we had any grapes. I told you no every time that we don't have any grapes! I swear if you come back in here again, and ask for grapes, I'll nail your webbed feet to the floor!!"
The duck left, and returned the next day. This time he asked, "Do you have any nails?"
The clerk replied, "No," and the duck said, "Good! Got any grapes?"

I've been Tagged!
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate. I still love eggnog, but prefer chocolate anything!
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? He wraps them.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Colors. I'm never going to have the beautiful classy tree at the stores, I'm going to have a real tree (ok, fake), with mixed up ornaments and kids helping.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? No.
5. When do you put your decorations up? Whenever we get the energy after Thanksgiving. I did put jingle bells on the doorknobs early this year, I was so excited (i.e. before Thanksgiving!).
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? cranberry relish is my first thought. I think we're going to have Chinese for Christmas dinner this year as I have to work.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? looking at the Christmas lights with my glasses off/contacts out (they're all blurry and beautiful that way).
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Don't remember. I wasn't especially young.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We didn't when I was young, but my family started opening them after I moved out. I really don't like to; it's not Christmas yet! To yield to the urges of others, I buy jammies for my kids and let them open those on Christmas Eve (from Grandma and Papa).
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? I contract it out to the children, who enjoy it thoroughly!
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Didn't move to NC twice for joy of snow. Would be happy to never see snow again.
12. Can you ice skate? Yes, but DH can't (can't rollerskate either), so haven't in many moons.
13. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Family visits and games and good times together. I love the church traditions and carols too.
14. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? #1 son loves sweet potato pie any time, so we eat it on the holidays. otherwise - fudge! or spritz cookies.
15. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I like to look at the lights. DH isn't as enthused. A local park puts up thousands of lights and charges to drive through; we're going tonight for #2 son's birthday celebration.
16. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? Giving; receiving is usually more disappointing if you rely on it for your joy.
17. What are favorite Christmas Songs? Oh Come (Oh Come) Emanuel, The Angel Gabriel from heaven Came (Sting did this one!) - most all of them. every time I look in the hymn book I find more I wish we sang more often.

NOT complaining today!
friday morning i was already beginning to feel better. that zithromax is good stuff!
i got presents wrapped sat. (except one of brother's, so i haven't been to UPS yet. today for sure!) and cookies baked sun., fudge set. #1 son is begging me to make more fudge - i offered him the spoon to lick, and he declined, said he didn't like fudge. i said try a little taste, it's good, just chocolate chips and a little more stuff. so he tasted and his eyes widened. we have the beginnings of another fudge addict here!
the baking so far is for gifties, so hopefully we'll get another batch made after sister-in-law leaves for northern regions with those.
i'm so glad and grateful to be feeling better! merry christmas everyone!

this may not be up for long
i've been exhausted to the point of growing roots on my couch (being a potato) since getting KU. since i'm 11 weeks tomorrow, that's 8 to 9 weeks of nothing much getting done around here. it's finally lifted somewhat. and then i got the sinus infection last week, which made things worse/not improve.
if i don't work (which i totally couldn't), i don't get paid. don't know about the rest of you! so here i am, don't know how i'm paying the mortgage, don't know how i'm getting through the month (except i can buy food if i don't pay the mortgage, so there ya go). i've already charged the mortgage twice this year due to financial circumstances, any my cards are all maxed now. getting through the next month looks fun - not!
pray for some aid to come my way, will you?
to be fair, DH won't let me ask for help until the sitch is dire, so guess what? i asked today, and DH doesn't have to know. i had hinted, but that's not the same as asking, as mom was quick to reply. she's calling me later.
somebody hug me!

ineeda mary kay meeting
way back when i started selling Mary Kay, i was a negative person, with negative energy. they taught me to rephrase and rework my energy and find positives in most everything. i lost a LOT of money, but i had tremendous personal growth, and felt good about my MK experiences. i also felt good about quitting and selling Pampered Chef instead, since it's more "me."
well, i thought i'd won that fight and i was a positive person now. but i'm just getting more and more negative lately. and i'm blaming hormones. i don't care if they're fully responsible or not, but i'm blaming them! since i got PG, i'm more moody, less patient, irritable, and negative. i give myself negative messages all the time and i'm closer to depression than i like to be. gr!
this is supposed to be a HAPPY time. moody, yeah; emotional, yeah; but happy! it's just not fair that i should be downer than i've been in years.
ah well. should i be right and it's hormones, they'll leave eventually, and the parasite will be a leech instead of an internal organism. (shut up. i don't care if those are negative words to use for a positive person whom i'll love with my whole heart. just cuz i know that doesn't mean those words aren't an accurate description.)
don't comment if you don't have nice things to say. gr. i need some positive energy! and hugs.

update - 9 weeks 5 days
saw dr. again yesterday. she had some suggestions for the fatigue that has plagued me the last month! she said i shouldn't keep trying to be superwoman and to DRINK SOME DAMN COFFEE! at which i was much relieved and am actually alert for a while today. who'da thunk? it also helps with the bloat as it stimulates digestive function, to put it politely. of course, that makes me hungry again... but i have healthy snacks and can make good choices.
the nutritionist had great ideas for eating a balanced diet; she said even if i'm eating something that's not exactly 100% healthy, it's ok; just balance the plate with other healthier choices, and control portion size. that sounds SO much easier than trying to eat broiled chicken and steamed veg. every night!
we heard the heartbeat with Doppler, which is awesome! it's very early to be able to do that! dr. also said i'd likely feel fetal movement before my next visit, as this is my third trip down the baby aisle.
i'd been falling into a depressive slump; too much fatigue, not enough work hours, yielding very low income, which increases the depression and fatigue and feeds itself on a nasty cycle. i actually visited with the neighbor and a church lady neighbor yesterday, in addition to my two health-care visits (nutritionist and OB), and i'm feeling MUCH more chipper today. so, in addition to putting caffeine back in my daily regimen, and walking, i'm planning adult human interaction more frequently to keep me off my slide into depression. and i feel very positive today!
can't wait to see my little beaner! won't happen until about Feb., but that's really not long.

pregnancy update 8 weeks
Monday, 11/27/2006:
8 weeks 2 days
PROS: getting to be too busy to obsess (plus past the point where i had m/c first time, so less need). feeling great most of the time. looking forward to less fatigue.
CONS: forgot my meds sat. pm and spent yesterday miserable! missing IBS meds = spend the day in the bathroom. missing GERD meds = spend the day nauseous, popping Rolaids. missing asthma meds = spend the day short of breath. (the PRO to this CON is when i figured out what happened, i was so relieved to realize that i wasn't going to feel like this for weeks!)
Wednesday, 11/29/2006:
i'm still starving, exhausted, and busy! the nutrition/diet thing is going fairly well - i behave for a couple of days, then take a day off. when the food aversions stop i'll try harder to go longer between days off. had to have mcdonald's for lunch today - extra pickles on a quarter pounder, lots of fries - it's just a taste that nothing else will satisfy!
gotta get more work in; no $$$!
my neighbor has promised me a baby shower - at first i felt like major selfish; i already had two! first baby had NC and PA family shower, and second in UT had shower. well, this one is in NC, and 7.5 years after #2, so i have NOTHING in the big category, and NOTHING in the small category (except a few keepsakes, going-home outfits etc.), either! planning to register at Target, probably shortly after Christmas. the good part is, i know exactly what i need and will USE.
major pregnant brain - no linear thought, just non sequiturs all day. no so different from usual for me, i can hear you saying! at least i'm used to non sequiturs. so my posts may read this way for the duration.

security and jobs in india
I work in Medical Transcription, and have since I was 21 (that's 15 years now! eek!). Some years ago, companies began using Indian help. They excuse this saying that they can't find trained, competent employees in America. Well, they sure can't for what they can pay Indian employees!
I've been uncomfortable with this for a long time, in varying degrees from mad to irate, whenever it crosses my mind. But it was drawn to my attention yesterday the serious implications of using Indian call centers, and transcriptionists, and general work, for American jobs.
Several years ago, a law called HIPAA was passed. This was supposed to ensure that our medical records were safe and confidential. Remember all the doctors' offices handing out the papers to sign that you were aware of this?
If your medical records are going to India, the HIPAA laws cannot be enforced there. Your records and personal information are available to people who cannot be prosecuted for anything they choose to do with them. Medical records include SSN, DOB, mother's maiden name; everything an enterprising criminal (of any nationality) needs to steal your identity.
If you call a call center in India and give somebody your credit card information, there is no reason to expect that information is confidential, either. AMERICAN LAWS CANNOT BE ENFORCED IN INDIA.
Are you outraged? This is beyond neglect; it makes our laws a joke. I consider myself an educated person, and I have been aware of the facts for years; I never realized the implications of those facts. The average man on the street doesn't know the facts, but should!
We are commencing a grass-roots campaign to get our legislators aware of the problems with the HIPAA laws; if they passed these laws for anything more than a joke, action needs to be taken NOW. Identity theft is a problem that grows every day; if it hasn't happened to you or someone close to you, just wait! I felt secure, and I was being careful, but my debit card was "virtually" stolen in October.
Please reply with your email address if this concerns you; when we have a letter campaign started, we'll send it to you.

changes
my little sister just started her blog, so i was inspired to start posting again. looking back at my previous posts, there are BIG changes here! we're excited to say that we're expecting another addition to the family in July! surprise! after i had the IUD removed in March, i had charted, but had never had a period, just spotting. in September, i saw the GYN about this, who told me that was only ovulating rarely, if at all. and in October, we found out that didn't mean quite the same thing as never.
we're thrilled with another blessing in our family. and scared and freaked out to no small degree! but we're all looking forward to it.
other thoughts will be posted as they stray in and out of my hormonal, dysfunctional brain!

MY birth story
#1 son, my water broke but didn't gush. so they put cervidil in my cervix to make it thin, for 12 hours. then they started the pitocin drip to induce labor.
20 hours and four epidurals later, i had pushed for 3 hours. the FOURTH epidural wore off. (it was june in Philly and i had gained 20 pounds of WATER the last month, so they couldn't get them in the right space.) (they finally realized all the fluid hadn't come out with the water breaking and broke the bag lower down so it could get out. labor progressed rapidly from that point.)
so they reached in with forceps and ripped him out. it doesn't make me queasy to say so, but watching that movie [see post below] - whoo, pass me the damp cloths! tore all over the place, too. then the OB stitches me up without local - and epidural worn off.
so i focused on the newborn in my arms and ignored the sting as best i could. (i'm sure the local would have still been a stick, so he figured sew me up quick and it'll be done. he was that kinda guy.)
we had a little while to bond, then took baby to the newborn nursery. meanwhile, i kept bleeding. every time i massaged my uterus, gush. (they "say" readheads bleed more; who knew?)
five hours later, baby still in newborn nursery (apparently it's a one-way trip; can't come back to delivery room), i finally got to my room. nurses are very solicitous, it's after midnight, can they get me anything? i'm like, MY BABY!
(i was humming Chili's baby-back ribs song - i want my baby back, baby back, baby back, baby back - for hours!)
#2 - scheduled induction. #1 was 9-6, my sister's #1 was 9 and #2 was 9-4 (#2 born just a few months before mine, and we had the same OB! ran into him at the hospital when visiting sister's baby, and he says, yes, jennifer, we'll induce you.)
it snowed that morning and nobody wanted to go to the hospital. but it was a light snow and we didn't live far, so when they called me and said can you come? i answered, how soon do you want me?
IV started at 10:30 with the pitocin, and broke the water then. i actually felt urge to push around 4:30. doctor came and checked me at 5:00 and said, time to push!
well, he turns to scrub and gown, and i swear, i thought to myself, "you're a pure idiot if you think this is going fast enough for you to stick around."
at 5:17, #2 son was born, 9-14.
how's that for contrast? they "say" induction is more intense (though i'm sure those of you without epidurals would argue!). so you get an epidural straight away. i'm terrified of needles but when you need an epidural, you don't care. much.
the anesthesiologist with #2 was awesome - he'd tell you the position he wanted you in, you'd do your best, then he reached out and picked you up and moved you. i mean, i'm over 200 pounds, and he just moved me so nicely. it was the easiest position change in MONTHS!
so - i'm insane to want to go through it all again, but i do. if only DH would come around!

"birth story"
i think i'm going to throw up. or pass out. and i'm not squeamish usually! oh. but my babies were HUGEHUGEHUGE (9-6 and 9-14) and i know i bled like heck with #1.
ok, put my head between my knees and drank some Coke. i'm SO not squeamish!
DH had his septum straightened last month; i watched them remove the packing (lots of blood and mucus, gross), and when he had a seizure immediately afterward _I_ held him in the chair, and took care of him. i'm more lightheaded now than then!
guess i won't be "birth story"'s next huge fan...

laser eyes?
having had the glasses for ~4 weeks now, i must admit i AM happier. the symptoms the doctors attributed to trigeminal neuralgia and neuropathy are nearly gone - and came back the day i forgot to wear my glasses. i've been on neuro meds for months, and ?without reason? moved up my followup appointment; we were planning to taper anyway, and with this, i'm eager to begin that.
between allergies and astigmatism, my eyes and nose could be burning without it being attributed to the trigeminal nerve. sometimes perhaps we know too much about science, and look for the complicated explanations when the simpler ones might be more correct. of course, when i started having this problem, it had only been a few months since my annual eye exam, and i had no problem then, so who could have known? not me - and apparently neither the family doctor nor the neurologist, either!
i just stepped on a frog
it was kinda squishy and kinda gross (cuz i didn't know what i'd stepped on), but cool at the same time! (not cold-ish cool, but more rad)
everybody should go step on a frog. it's a surprising experience.
ribbit.

weather & NC
well, i just peeked at next week's calendar on yahoo.com (i love it - free computerized calendar. who needs blackberries?) to see if i have anything i need to remember. the calendar includes the forecast. not bad for free, right? well, monday is forecast high of 71, and tuesday of 76.
well, it's north carolina, is all i can say. i do hope we have a pretty cold winter so we have fewer bugs next spring, and hopefully fewer allergens. i know, who are you and what have you done with our jennifer? especially her scarlett half? well, i'm getting older and wiser all the time, and learned how our winter weather affects our summer pests. hehehe
i'm also planning a big party in may when i break my lifetime record for longest time in one house. isn't that cool? may have to continue having parties every year i remain in this house, too. and with dad's custom pantry work, how could i leave? we talk about doing a sunroom in back; rip out the deck, put in a screen porch, only with glass so we can use it all year. that would be great. hardwood floors if we ever become solvent.
anyhoo... just a wee little vent. hope y'all are colder than me (hey, i'm still jennifer most of the time!).

bras again
the good news is, when the humidity decreases at the end of summer (about two weeks ago), they go on without sticking to me first after the shower.
worse news, my favorite shirt's elastic in the neck ribbing gave up the ghost. it's a t-shirt, but you've all seen it, it has an angel/fairy on the front, green tie-die background. got it at Cracker Barrel. i'm gonna hafta graft a new collar onto it, cuz i can't give it up!
(this fits into this post because it's another elastic problem.)
can't wait for Halloween! oh, wait, i have to buy COSTUMES this year. last year they made costumes out of what they had. gr.

911
But today's post is not about 9/11 the date, but about 911 the emergency line. I got to dial it for the first time (without incurring penalties and lectures, that is) last night.
let me backtrack a bit. Tuesday evening, after bedtime (11-ish), we heard an argument in the street. We live on a very quiet residential street, in a very quiet neighborhood; usually the most disruption is when the teenager who lives on the cul-de-sac roars through in his car TOO FAST. Tuesday evening, however, we heard a woman's voice yelling, low man's voice, and lots of arguing. this went on for quite some time - or so it seemed to us! at least 30 minutes or more.
Last night, we didn't hear a disruption until someone came running up our driveway calling out - then banging on our door, calling for help! well, I wasn't going to get up, but DH went to the door; he didn't open it, but he called through it. Then he hollered up the stairs for me to call 911. I thought he was threatening this person if they didn't go away we'd call the police on them, but actually, she WANTED us to call the police.
So I dialed 911 and said "we need the police." (DH did open the door about then.) The neighbor told us she had been beaten by her husband and was afraid he would leave with her son (age 3). The operator, of course, told her there was nothing they could do about him taking her son, as they were still married with no custodial dispute. but she was bleeding, and said he had drunk two bottles of Cutty Sark (isn't that whiskey? how could he STAND!?), and busted up her cell phone, so SHE couldn't call for help. so they sent the police, and an ambulance, I think.
This woman went back across the street and across the cul-de-sac, being frantic for her child. Meanwhile, I stayed on-line with the 911 operator until the police arrived. DH went back with her and became a witness to her condition/allegations. (I stayed home to prevent MY children being frantic.)
I was in my nightgown, DH in his boxers, no shoes. So after the police had arrived, I walked up the hill with a pair of shoes for him. He stayed until he'd given a statement, then came home. (I was on my knees by the bed, scared out of my mind!)
Apparently, this family is not LIVING across the street, just PARTYING across the street with a friend of the people who recently bought the house. (yup, there goes the neighborhood!) and our midnight visitor wasn't quite sober herself, IMO. DH thinks more than alcohol was at play. on a weeknight, with a 3-year-old child in the house. (but it was only 10 pm, really, not midnight.)
Well, all we could do is what we did. And I got to call 911. But I have a feeling this story isn't over. Hopefully, we'll have extra patrols, and less disturbance, and as they aren't the purchasers of our neighbor's house, they will be transient and find someplace else to party - or not party, as we'd hope. *sigh* Further bulletins as events warrant, as Calvin used to say/scream.

When I am an Old Woman
I just heard a story about an old woman...
she goes to the grocery store, does her shopping, picks up a watermelon and feels chest pain. she checks out anyway, but she looks peaky and the clerk helps her out of the store. the clerk can't pick up watermelon because it's too heavy, so this old lady picks it up again to put in her car!
doesn't that just sound like something _I_ would do?
The following has been one of my FAVORITE lifetime poems since I was 17, I think; maybe younger! since i first read it for sure. "Red-hat" societies have become increasingly popular and use this poem for their motto. I'm a bit chagrined because I loved it before they did, but thrilled that it's got such wide exposure and fondness.
As for me, I intend to carry a permanent marker and correct people's misspellings without care for "ruining" their signs.
But I don't think "people" will be too shocked and surprised when suddenly _I_ am an old woman and start to wear purple!
"When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple."

Being Beautiful
I am beautiful because I believe I am beautiful. I am beautiful because this is how God made me. I am beautiful when I go to church and know that, yes, I make mistakes, and say things I regret at times, but God has forgiven me. I can only apologize, hope those to whom I have apologized will forgive me, but God has already, and He matters most.
I am beautiful when I am at peace with myself and those around me.
Please share how you are beautiful!

summer
we took a trip to the beach with my dear aunt and her family. they fit nicely in between our ages; DH is oldest, followed by aunt, uncle, me, girl cousin, DS, boy cousin, DS. Had a blast, learned new vegetarian recipe for tacos which we actually prefer to meat. the beach is too dang expensive but DH doesn't experience summer unless he goes to the ocean, so whaddayagonnado? plus, had nice income tax return, so there ya go. beach, childcare for the summer, and back into debt.
going to visit DH's brother next week at another beach. survived brain abscess six months ago; the whole family is getting together to say "sure glad you aren't dead, dude."
meanwhile, my big sister is - surprise! - expecting in October. just turned 37. should be an adventure!
#2 son had tonsils out the end of May, and between that and summer being what it is, there goes the blog until September. So unless I have any DEEP THOUGHTS before Sept., I'll see you then.

the crap on TV
"Thick and Thin (midseason): Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video produces this sitcom about a formerly overweight woman (The Practice's Jessica Capshaw, aka Steven Spielberg's stepdaughter) who has to deal with the new way people treat her when she loses all the weight."
oh yeah, i'm sure that's a real hardship. why can't we have a TV show that deals with all the crap people give you when you GAIN weight? izzit your thyroid? ARGH!

kids in church
taught sunday school this week. we're doing joshua, our part is leading up to jericho. he parted the waters, you know, like moses (i didn't; mo's don't focus on old testament). so we're making stepping stones. the teachers teach the same lesson three weeks (to three different classes) and are free. this is our third time teaching. we love it, learn every time.
one of the kids in this class is a bit rambunctious. okay, over-the-top rambunctious. had to settle him down a few times. after class, just before service, he comes past me (he's 9ish?) and kinda punches me in the shoulder. really rather hard. he's with his father.
so i go into sanctuary with da boyz. said kid comes in several minutes later and runs up, kisses my cheek, hugs me and says sorry. #1 son is all big eyes. i whisper (HE kissed ME, _I_ didn't kiss HIM!) cuz you know that's all against the rules. DS nodded, but he didn't like it; not my fault, but he didn't like it.
so we do communion this week (it's once a month). we're of the get-up-and-make-a-semicircle-around-the-preacher persuasion. mr. rambunctious is collecting used cups in a basket, following the person giving them to us, following the preacher who gives the bread. we had cautioned him that he'd have to be on his best behavior to take on this task. and he was! he was terrific.
so as he passes me, i squeeze his shoulder, and say "doing great!" he reaches up and squeezes the nearest thing. highly shocked, i grab his hand and smack it lightly. then spend the rest of my communion time berating myself for smacking a child - DURING COMMUNION!
after service, go talk to his parents. we're becoming friends; have visited each other's houses once. tell them. they are hysterical, dying laughing. i had been really offended at the moment, but realized on reflection that mr. R was just friendly squeezing the nearest thing to him, and did not mean for it to be the boobie. parents say they're glad they didn't see it; they'd have been terribly embarrassed. i'm saying, but i smacked your child - DURING COMMUNION! dad sez, smack him harder next time!
ah, youth. just a little trouble controlling impulses and our strength.

LASER EYES!
for the first year, I dreamed all the time that my vision had regressed to how it used to be (20/400 - rather bad). (The dreams gradually became less and less frequent.) I was paranoid and wouldn't throw away/donate my glasses until the 6-week checkup! but it works and I really love being able to see.
so, I can't remember, but it's probably been a year since I had one of those dreams. I had one again last night. weird! it might be because #1 son leaves his new pair of glasses (11/04) on my headboard every night when I read him his story... Gotta break that habit! I like being able to see, even in my dreams!

let's hear it for floobies!
i recently posted i had been diagnosed with papilloma for my 35th birthday. well, when they went to look for it for a ductogram, or a fine needle biopsy, they couldn't find it. they ultimately did an MRI, which showed normal floobies. yay! i get to keep my floobies! (the new thinking is that the original symptom was caused by an irritated duct, which appeared like a papilloma on mammogram, but had cleared up by the time the MRI was done - four weeks later.)
anywho- let's hear it for floobies! I got to have my first mammogram the week of my birthday, and I gotta tell ya, I've heard some horrible things about mammograms. they pinch and they hurt and they're horrible. well, if your breast tissue is the opposite of dense (read: floobies!), I think it likely hurts less. the normal mammogram wasn't really much to complain about. the tighter one for the abnormality was ouchy, but not too bad - and I'm the girl with the low pain threshold who cries over everything!
(the attempt at fine needle aspiration was a lot worse than the mammogram, and that was probably BECAUSE of the floobies, but i digress.)
i'm back to myself again and feel like posting my deep thoughts once more. i'm sure you all missed me. now you gotta kiss me.
SPRING???
beat feet back inside and thank goodness for air conditioning. gr.

Gabe
- I may still fuss over babies, but NOT kiss them. only my children.
- I must give my kids equal fussing time.
I also explained how my whole life is set up so Gabe and Tyler will be happy people. I could have a different job, but they would not be as happy in after school care, so I didn't change jobs. I read and sing to them every night so they will be happy. I spend time with them doing things they like to do and things we all like to do so we will be a happy family.
I also reminded Gabe that I have a big heart and room for lots of people in it. I didn't love him any less when Tyler joined our family. He was happier after this talk. But I still can't kiss anybody who doesn't live in our house.

birthdays
For my 30th birthday, I got postpartum depression.
For this one, I've been diagnosed with a papilloma. That's a benign thing, but requires medical care.
I am getting OLD.
On the plus side, I was recently told I looked 10 years younger than I am! That felt good!
But physically, if I have one more thing go wrong this year, I may as well quit.
This is NOT a good post. I do apologize.

guess what gross stuff i learned today! OR why nurses are dangerous!
This problem frequently erupts when people who have been exposed to it go on strong antibiotics, which everyone with GI infections gets.]
[The way C. diff. is spread:] C diff causes spores which are "shed" by the person who has it. These spores can survive up to 70 days in the environment. To catch c diff, you have to ingest it (sounds gross, I know). There are so many ways that it can be transferred in the hospital. And you're at a bigger risk if you're on antibiotics which kill the good bacteria in your gut, allowing the c diff to proliferate and fill the void.
[how to prevent getting it:] The cleanliness of those around you at the hospital and the 'health' of the surfaces in your room is going to be a big determining factor with the C. diff., or with any other opportunistic infections. The very best thing would be to have a 'glove box' posted inside your room door and for the nurses to be instructed that they have to glove up before coming near you. And that would also apply to almost anyone that enters your room - food try handlers, med techs, anyone........
And that's going to prove problematic as you've already thought out. I'd start by talking with your surgeon/doc and see what you can arrange. If necessary, you might purchase the glove box yourself and ask each person to please glove up as they walk in. Your going to be considered a pain and a nut, but what the hell.
If possible bring your own food utensils - wash and use them at every meal. If your food tray is placed on the bed tray, don't touch the tray, itself. Move it using the bed sheet around your hands, or use gloves.
And if you haven't used gloves before, learn the proper way to take them off - use one gloved hand to grab the cuff and pull it down over the hand section so it's inside-out. Ball it in the palm of the gloved hand, and with the un-gloved hand, grab the cuff and roll the glove down off the hand so that the other 'balled glove' is inside. Discard them as a unit. If you have to, when you use the bathroom, 'glove' the handles of the faucet and the toilet (before) each time you use them, and remove and discard each time.
Yeah, you'll use a heck of a lot of gloves, but what the heck if it keeps you 'clean.' If you want to disinfect, that may be problematic, as I don't know too many disinfectants that are reported to kill C. diff., although some on the board might. The cheapest might be a 10% solution of bleach - it's pretty effective in a molecular lab and might work well. The only thing that I know that does work is phenol or phenolic solutions, but they're caustic and dangerous. I don't know how you're going to feel after the operation, but if you can take some steps to protect yourself I'd sure seriously think about it.
[my personal input:] i got my CNA certificate last year, and in NC, at least, we're required to wear gloves whenever dealing with body fluids. your nurses shouldn't be annoyed by being asked to wear gloves even more often. and our hospitals have several sizes of glove boxes in every patient room, next to the door, with a purell dispenser.
if you explain to your caregivers that you have had c.diff, they'll understand your request that they take precautions.
i cared for patients with c.diff as a student, and it is required to glove AND gown if you are entering their rooms. doesn't mean the staff does it; saw the RNs go in to check a gauge in their uniform; they said they weren't touching anything, so they didn't need to.
nurses need to be educated about how c.diff is spread; i didn't know about the spores etc. it's our first responsibility to protect our patients, not expose them to next-door's spores of c.diff!
I got my CNA as a prerequisite for RN, but then had to drop out of school due to GI troubles and financial strain. now working full-time at my job as a medical transcriptionist. been doing this 13 years now, know just enough to be dangerous about so MANY things, thought RN would be less dangerous - guess i was wrong!

tire store
we drove to richmond last weekend. DH checked the oil prior to leaving, as we
really were due for the oil change already. he added a quart.
as we arrived home (DH drove straight through, as the kids were asleep), when we got off the freeway, we noticed a smell of burning oil. hoped it was the car in front of us, since it had just become noticeable. it wasn't. we pulled in the garage, and DH looked into the engine compartment right away. the oil cap had not been replaced tightly and had come off. fortunately, it was still IN the engine. so was a good quart of oil, all over the surfaces and smoking. so we didn't procrastinate the oil change any longer! i'd noticed a drop in mileage a few weeks ago and thought "I'd better get that changed!" oops.
whoever drove my van back out front after its oil change was SMOKING! i didn't see him, i only smelled my van afterward! i was furious! it's COLD and I had to drive with the window down to keep from gagging! it was a terribly strong smell. what would you have done?
DH had gone to get his tires rotated a few days earlier and found that he had belt showing through on two tires. our accident in layton seems to make the tires wear more quickly on the elantra. couldn't be his driving style! he's so unused to having passengers, he takes corners at top speed. until i was a passenger more often, i myself was oblivious to the need to drive differently when chauffering. :D
so our local tire store has gotten their share of our income this week. they rotated the van's tires, too, and now it's pulling to the right, so we have to go back. argh.
enjoy the cold. we've got our share of that, too.

january, crikey!
the little one turned 5 and has Strep. the big one got a Green Belt and can't control himself in class. yours truly has returned to full-time employment (read: dropped out of college again) and has myriad health complaints. the DH remains frustrated with his direction in life and building dreams, not pursuing realities. (of course, it's hard to pursue realities in such a depressed economy, so at least he's raising his spirits.)
january, crikey! it's 70 degrees out and gorgeous. the forecast has us dropping to highs of 40 within days. gotta love north carolina "winters."
[ed. note: please leave me notes that you've been here. you may sign in as anonymous and identify yourself within your note, should you prefer not to remember yet another password!]
january. it's hard to be entertaining in January.
