What Not to Wear

I am such a Discovery channel junkie. and of all their awesome shows, this is probably my favorite. better yet, DH enjoys it. and my kids will put up with one or two episodes if i pout.

here's the shocker: I'm LEARNING from it.

i'm 38 years old, headed fast for 39 (in 3 weeks). i'm probably old enough to do something with my hair, makeup, clothes, a little more labor-intensive than wash and wear, whatever T-shirt is on the top of the drawer, ponytails, and makeup if i need a mood lift.

so i styled my hair a little differently the last time i cut it. (yeah, i'm still nuts, and i still cut it myself. it's curly, it forgives me, and i usually do a pretty good job.) and i pull it back on one side instead of a ponytail, which makes me feel prettier. this was inspired by a fashion mag comment about Demi Moore looking younger and softer when she didn't part her hair in the middle but let it fall in waves - i don't look like her, but it held true for me, too. ponies make your hair look severe without bangs, and i can't wear bangs.

it's still wash and wear. and though i totally hate the idea, someday when i have a job OUT of the home again, i'll likely have to STYLE MY HAIR every morning - for the first time in my life. i'm somewhat comforted by the idea that i am paying my time into an account - all the time i'm saving now with wash-and-wear hair, i'll pay back later.

***********
and the big 4-0 looming on the horizon is much more palatable when i figured out i wouldn't be a larva anymore. if you haven't read The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love and its many sequels, what are you waiting for? i've been plugging them for years, i finally met the boss SPQ Jill at a book signing in January, and you will not regret it. Jill figures it's a wonder we have all our limbs under 40 - we feel grown up, we got cars and everything, but we're just larva. and that gives me something to look forward to!

innit fun psyching your-ownself out?

Do you really mean to say that mamas do something other than wear ponytails and t-shirts? I'm shocked! Where would you get such ideas? And what is make up? :D

I have heard similar things about the hair. Shorter and less severe is good. It is nice that you can cut your own, too. Save lots of time and money! I cut mine last time and nobody seemed to notice, so I may try it again soon.

Actually, I'm looking forward to wearing skirts again. I could care less about the hair and make up. I'm not good at either and they don't seem to make much difference anyway. But it would be nice to wear my long skirts and not trip over them chasing kids. Someday!!

I try to cut my hair really short every time I get it cut because then I can't wear it in a ponytail every day. haha
